After thirty seven years of delivering care to seniors, the staff at The Evergreens Senior Healthcare attempted something new, something innovative and somewhat challenging. Director of Recreation Therapy, Deanna Truby, noticed how well residents responded to the arts and crafts classes offered. "People who were barely responsive would produce amazing, beautiful things," she noted. The reaction was so positive, that in 1997 Truby hired Harriet Saunby, a professional artist, to teach art classes to the residents of The Evergreens. Even though many of the resident artists had no prior experience, the fledglings grew bolder and began painting with great conviction. Within a year, the artists held their first public art exhibit, which has become an annual event.
In May of 2002, The Evergreens Volunteer Board of Trustees met to develop a strategic plan to provide guidance for the future of The Evergreens. A strategic imperative was designed to implement a new Long Term Care Model of continuing education and learning utilizing the best practices from the current art program. As a result, we have developed The Evergreens Renaissance. |
